This year’s event:

Significance of Datta Jayanti:

The devotees can visit the Temple of their choice or perform the pooja at home.  Many devotees complete a reading of Guru Charitra on this occasion.

Parable of Lord Dattatreya:

As per the Hindu folklore, Dattatreya is the son of the sage Atri and his wife, Anasuya.

Anasuya was a very chaste and virtuous wife. She had performed severe Tapas (austerities) to get a son equal to the trinity of Brahma, Vishnu and Mahesh (Shiva). Jealous of Ansuya, spouses of the Trinity, Goddess Saraswati, Lakshmi, and Parvati asked their husbands to test her virtuousness.

To test her virtue, Brahma Vishnu and Mahesh visited Anasuya in the guise of sadhus (ascetics) while Atri was away and asked her for alms. Anasuya became tense but soon regained her composure She uttered a mantra, sprinkled water on the three sages, turned them into babies, and then breastfed them.

When Atri returned to his ashram (hermitage), Anasuya informed him what had transpired, Atri already knew about this through his psychic powers. He took the three babies and transformed them into a single baby with three heads and six arms.

As the trinity did not return, their wives became anxious and went to Anasuya. The three goddesses sought forgiveness and pleaded Anasuya to send back their husbands. Anasuya accepted the request. Then the Trimurti appeared in their natural form, before Atri and Anasuya, and blessed them with a son, Dattatreya.
